Serving Essex County

General Court on May 10, 1643, when it was decreed that the entire plantation within the jurisdiction be divided into four shires. As was the era’s custom, the county was named after its English counterpart. Initially, Essex County encompassed the towns of Salem, Lynn, Wenham, Ipswich, Rowley, Newbury, Gloucester, and Andover.

In 1680, Haverhill and Salisbury, situated north of the Merrimack River, were incorporated into Essex County. Over the centuries, these ten substantial settlements were subdivided, resulting in the current array of cities and towns within Essex County. Notably, Essex County played a pivotal role in the origin of the term “gerrymandering.” Elbridge Gerry, a native of Marblehead, configured voting districts into a salamander-like shape in 1812, right here in Essex County, leading to the creation of the term.
