Essex County is in the northeast corner of Massachusetts and covers over 800 square miles, with almost half of it being water. It’s full of history, just like the rest of New England. The county was first created way back on May 10, 1643, by the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They wanted to divide the area into sections and named it after a county in England. Originally, places like Salem, Lynn, Wenham, Ipswich, Rowley, Newbury, Gloucester, and Andover were part of Essex County. Later in 1680, Haverhill and Salisbury joined the group. These big towns were eventually split into all the cities and towns in Essex County today. Fun fact: the word “gerrymandering” started here because of Elbridge Gerry from Marblehead, who made some odd-shaped districts in 1812.
In the 2010 Census, Essex County had a population of 743,159 people. Even though it’s close to the big city of Boston, which is a short drive away, Essex County is part of the “Greater Boston” area, which increases the population size a lot. Because of its rich history, the National Park Service named it the “Essex National Heritage Area.”
